Malmö Aviation flies Meat free on Mondays
MALMÖ, October 6, 2011 -- On October 10, Malmö Aviation starts with Meat free Mondays aboard. The concept, which is part of the company's extensive environmental work will be introduced at all Monday departures.
Starting October 10th, all Malmö Aviation Monday flights to be meat free. This is a new initiative in the environmental work carried out over a long period and the aim is to get passengers to open their eyes to environmental issues and show how we, with simple means, can reduce our environmental impact.
The airline industry accounts for about 2-3 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions while raising the animals for the meat industry generates 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is one of the reasons for the introduction of Meat free Mondays.
"It is not our intention to reverse all our customers to orthodox vegans. But while we still want to offer something delicious onboard, we also get our passengers to reflect and hopefully open the taste of those who think that vegetarian food is difficult, strange and tasteless. If we at the same time can do something good for the planet,
it simply can’t go wrong, "says Ann-Sofie Hörlin, Environmental Manager, Malmö Aviation.
With the introduction of Meat free Monday count Malmö Aviation to reduce carbon emissions by about 35 tons per year. Meat consumption will be reduced by more than five tons, equivalent to the annual average meat consumption of 65 Swedes.
Malmö Aviation recently ordered 10 new aircraft by the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier. The aircraft is of type C-series is scheduled in traffic 2014th. The new aircraft will cut fuel consumption by 25% and noise by about 30% compared with current aircraft. “Our emissions targets to reduce our carbon-emissions by 30 % will be reached already in five years, when the new fleet is in place. The next step must be the opportunity to fly our new aircraft with biofuel” ends Ann-Sofie Hörlin.
